Sticks
and Stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me. That was the line
we all used to chant when the kid who couldn't quite form his vowels would
swear at us in the playground. The problem now is that what people say about us
and what we say about ourselves online will cause untold damage as we head out
into the job market.
This
goes double for the students in our care.
Picture
the evening: a 6th former out for a beer on the weekend, 18 years
old, able to legally enjoy a glass or two. Some hi jinx later he is pulling
faces and mugging for the camera holding a pint. Three clicks is all it takes
for that photo to become private and on someone’s phone to public and on a
billion laptops. Or more importantly, in someone’s HR in box.
Companies
check the web and with harmless youthful indiscretions can come every chance
you will lose the chance for that job once the degree is in the bag. If
universities are turning down students for the slightest reason, imagine what
an employer with 400 CVs and no time will do!
Older
students with careers on their mind should listen up and pay attention to the
world of work and the rapidly ever more changing environment they are going in
to – control what you say and pay close attention to how you look on-line –
check out this article for a better handle on how to get smart:
Good luck
out there…
